The recently published Eurelectric position paper on Smart Charging was discussed on a work shop today in Brussels. The work shop was titled: "Smart Charging of Electric Vehicles: Unlocking the full Potential of Electrified Transport". The key note speech was given by Britta Thomsen - member of the European Parliament, S&D Denmark.
Representatives from European energy companies, equipment manufacturers, the automotive industry and European politics was today gathered in the Eurelectric offices to discuss the recently published Eurelectric position paper "European electricity industry views on charging Electric Vehicles".
In the paper Eurelectric calls for an efficient integration of electric vehicles into the European electricity generation and distribution system, unlocking the full benefits of electricity as a transport fuel. Eurelectric therefore recommends that, once a mass market for electric vehicles has been established, cars should be charged in a smart way. Coordinating and managing electrical loads for charging electric vehicles will: facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources into the electricity system; enable grid management that introduces flexibility into the system; optimise efficient use of generation capacity; ensure a cost-effective solution by avoiding unneccessary grid investments; and maximise consumer convenience through the use of available infrastructure.
In the work shop's key note speech, MEP Britta Thomsen proved that she is promoting EVs through her work in the European Parliament. Looking forward, she sees three important topics for the EV industry; 1. Investments in charging infrastructure, 2. Standards for EVs and infrastructure and 3. the connection between EVs and the Smart Grid.
More information about the work shop will come later.
