EV's and CO2

Typical reduction in CO2 emissions when changing from a gasoline car to Electric vehicles in Denmark.

During the last days there has been a lot of debate in Denmark on CO2 emissions from EV’s, is it really lower than from gasoline cars?

Electricity generated in Denmark is typically based on 30% renewable energy and 70% based on a mix between coal and gas.

A typical EV will have a CO2 emission on 55 g/km. A new passenger car will have a CO2 emission on 120-160 g/km. So CO2 emissions from EV’s in Denmark is typically 2-3 times lower than a comparable gasoline car.

If you buy an EV today it will probably cause an even lower CO2 emission in the future since the share of renewable energy is expected to increase in the future. The gasoline car doesn’t have that advantage.
